White Trees with Yellow and Red, Laurance Rockefeller Preserve, WY, (WY16f1)

On an overcast day with new snow on the ground, I was looking for remnants of fall foliage in the Lawrence Rockefeller Preserve near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. With the dull light and no strong composition in sight I began to experiment with long exposures and camera movement. This ethereal image occurred by slightly moving the camera vertically during a one second exposure.

Early morning fog lifting from the water surface of the Connecticut River in the early fall season. Bright green Lily pads in the foreground establish a perspective for the distant river horizon and the clearing sky.

Evening sunlight glows on breaking waves on the rocky coast of Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in Down East Maine, Schoodic Point at the southern tip of the peninsula, has granite outcroppings, pounding surf, spruce, and unusual groupings of jack pine.

March 2016 Image of the Month: Dam at Aziscohos

Dam at Aziscohos

Constructed to create a storage basin on the Maggalloway River in western Maine, Aziscohos Dam was completed in 1911. When it was built, it was one of the largest storage reservoirs in the country, and with other dams in the region, it is part of one of the largest water storage systems in New England. The lake formed by the dam at Aziscohos is a headwater and one of the major tributaries to the Androscoggin River.

Details of the small buildings above the retention structure with their arches and brackets caught my attention, as I drove past the dam during a mid-winter snowstorm. Streaks made by falling snowflakes add a pencil-like texture to the dark areas of the large arch openings, and I felt the linear bridge, arriving from the left side of the frame, strengthened the composition.
