July 2015 Image of the Month: Bigelow Range After Storm

Bigelow Range After Storm
Bigelow Range After Storm, Carrabassett Valley, Maine

Unsettled, horizontal clouds stream through Carrabassett Valley near the base of the Bigelow Range as a heavy summer rainstorm begins to clear.  Sunlight reflecting from the cloud tops provides definition and depth against the mountain shapes, silhouetted behind the foreground foliage.  The challenge in making this photo was finding a balance between the bright sunlit areas and the dark tones in the foreground and background of the scene.

Dandelion Field with Overhanging Tree
Dandelion Field with Overhanging Tree: New Sharon, Maine

Along the banks of the meandering Sandy River between Farmington and New Sharon, Maine, fields of Dandelions thrive in the fertile soil of the flood plain. For this photograph the three contributors to the composition, Yellow Field, Foreground Tree and leading lines of the Tractor Path converge to create a dynamic image on an overcast day.
