In the grain-growing areas of the west and mid-west these historic grain elevators dominate the built environments of small rural towns, railroad crossings and farm collectives. Many of them are no longer active, having been replaced by pre-engineered metal buildings. She headed us in the right direction, and as we were leaving, she handed me a cup full of nasturtium seeds she had harvested. We planted them in the hanging baskets on our Schoolhouse porch this spring.
