October 2015 Image of the Month: Flagstaff Lake Sky Reflection

Flagstaff Lake Sky Reflection

Flagstaff Lake Sky Reflection, Flagstaff Lake, Maine

Soon after sunrise, the calm water of Flagstaff Lake in the High Peaks Region of Western Maine reflects the striking early morning sky.  The direction and movement of the cloud forms created a leading line directly to the distant mountains, making it possible for me to capture this dramatic scene.

September 2015 Image of the Month: Bigelow Range Morning Fog

Bigelow Range Morning Fog, Eustis, Maine

As early morning, autumn fog began to lift from the surface of Flagstaff Lake in Western Maine, I noticed that there were, in fact, two different fog layers. The higher layer, air born above the tree-lined shore, provided depth and separation between lake and the background mountain forms.   A lower layer, condensing at the lake surface, obscured the forested lake edge, creating an asymmetrical reflection, which I felt was a more compelling photograph.

August 2015 Image of the Month: Lobster Buoys

Lobster Buoys

08.15 Lobster Trap Buoys, Pemaquid, Maine

On an overcast day without much contrast, these Lobster trap buoys, articulated by their florescent paint, seemed to glow in the flat light. As I moved around the assembly of traps and buoys, this view at the corner with buoys aimed in opposing directions provided a dynamic composition. This photo, printed on canvas at 30” x 60”, is on exhibit in the lobby of R. M. Davis Inc., 24 City Center in Portland, Maine, until September 21, 2015.

July 2015 Image of the Month: Bigelow Range After Storm

Bigelow Range After Storm
Bigelow Range After Storm, Carrabassett Valley, Maine

Unsettled, horizontal clouds stream through Carrabassett Valley near the base of the Bigelow Range as a heavy summer rainstorm begins to clear.  Sunlight reflecting from the cloud tops provides definition and depth against the mountain shapes, silhouetted behind the foreground foliage.  The challenge in making this photo was finding a balance between the bright sunlit areas and the dark tones in the foreground and background of the scene.
